ArtWorks Newest Murals Installed in South Lake Union

Filed under: Events — Urban ArtWorks @ 2:55 pm

Schnitzer West and Vulcan Real Estate, development partners currently working together on the first phases of the new Amazon.com headquarters construction project in South Lake Union, have teamed with Urban ArtWorks to complete 3 teen painted murals to hang on construction fencing at the site.

These will be the first three murals in a series designed to beautify construction sites in South Lake Union. Follow on murals will be produced by the youth at Artworks through a continued partnership with Vulcan Real Estate.

The murals have historic themes, hearkening back to the rich history of the South Lake Union area. They will hang along Mercer Street, Terry Avenue and Harrison Street. They were designed by Todd Lown, with design assistance from Tom Dunham.

The murals were painted this fall at Artworks’ SODO studio by 16 court involved youth through a partnership with King County Superior Court’s VEST program. The murals will brighten the neighborhood with art, while giving Artworks’ youth the chance to learn the lessons of employment, creative expression and community engagement.

Lead artists on the project include Jay Gordon, Angela Larsen, Melissa Struyk and Todd Lown.
